Obama administration's 'rural tour' hits Va

GRETNA, Va. - The Obama administration's top energy and agriculture officials are in Southside Virginia for a rural community forum.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Energy Secretary Steven Chu met with local residents Saturday to discuss the administration's efforts to rebuild and recharge rural America.

They pointed to funding headed Virginia's way under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The funding includes $94 million for weatherization programs, $70 million for renewable energy programs, and $60 million to develop and implement energy-efficient projects.

For farming, they said hundreds of millions of dollars are headed to Virginia for loans and development initiatives.

Saturday's stops include a tour of Windy Acres Nursery in Gretna and Buddy Mayhew's Farm in Blairs.
