State Sen. Creigh Deeds, the Democratic candidate for governor, brought his “Deeds Country” tour to Pittsylvania County on Monday.
Deeds spoke with about 50 enthusiastic supporters at George and Janet Stanhope’s home on Strader Road in Chatham. Stanhope is an active member of Southside Concerned Citizens, which opposes uranium mining in the county.
Deeds, who joined the anti-mining group in the mid-1980s while working as a lawyer in Danville, is no friend of uranium. “I’m not afraid of science,” he said, “but I don’t think the science is going to suggest that you can do it here.
“I think there is way too much risk. I’m very skeptical you can mine uranium [here].
