North Anna Nuclear Reactor Shut Down for Refueling

Published: March 9, 2009

Dominion Virginia Power has shut down one of its two nuclear reactors at its North Anna power plant in Louisa County for refueling.

Unit 1 was shut down Saturday for its regular 18-month refueling, utility spokesman Richard Zuercher said today. Refueling typically takes 4-6 weeks.

The utility plans to use the shutdown to replace one-third of Unit 1's fuel, conduct a 10-year inspection of the reactor vessel, inspect and clean steam generators inside the containment building and replace one of the unit's two low-pressure turbines, Zuercher said.

Before being powered down, Unit 1 had run incident-free for 510 consecutive days since its last refueling shutdown, Zuercher said.

Unit 2, North Anna's other reactor, was operating at full power today. Unit 2 was taken down for refueling last September.
